Situated approximately 30 km east of Kavala, the Nestos River nature reserve encompasses two distinct regions: the Nestos Gorge at Toxotes and the Nestos Delta at Chrysoupolis. Both areas boast rich avian diversity and showcase breathtaking natural landscapes. The river's surroundings house several unique ecosystems, with the Nestos Delta featuring a hydrobiotop comprised of alluvial land, freshwater lakes, and lagoons. The National Park was established to safeguard the region's abundant birdlife, including the eastern lakes Vistonida and Ismarida, which serve as vital winter migratory rest stops for numerous bird species. Particularly noteworthy is the floodplain forest along the Nestos riverbanks, though significant portions were sadly cleared for agricultural purposes until the mid-20th century. The Nestos Delta, Lake Vistonida, and Lake Ismarida collectively form part of the prestigious East Macedonia and Thrace National Park.
